osCommerce website provide some special challenges with SEO

In September 2007  I was approached by the owner of an osCommerce website. The owner was concerned that no-one seemed to be finding her website in search engines, so the only visitors she was getting were people she was sending there, by giving them the url over the phone or from her business cards, SEO can help e-commerce websitesshe was mainly using the site to show her existing clients her product range.

Clients also weren’t tending to buy products from the site itself, but were ringing her with their order.

I had a look at her website statistics, and sure enough, she was not getting any visitors via search engines, all were from direct referrals.

After an intensive study of her competition which were gift box websites. I realized that her completion did not really have much in the way of SEO done either. After extensive analyzes what sort of words people used to find her products , I did a lot of on page optimization, as well as an intensive link building campaign, over 52% of her new traffic is coming through search engines, using a total of 702 different search phrases, she has slightly over 550 different products for sale on her site.

Besides the 52% of new visitors to the site, she was also getting over 33% of the visitors returning to the site from bookmarks they  had made, and while on the site visiting an average of 6.60 pages per visit, and spending an average of 3.25 minutes on the site per visit.

These are very high statistics, many websites may have 10,000 but the visitors only spend between 1-30 seconds on a site. In fact another site I do SEO for, when I started although it was getting has over 15,000 visitors per month, yet only 1000 of them spend more than 2 minutes on a the site. Now those statistics have doubled to 30,000 visitor and only about 1200 visitors stay less that 2 minutes.

The biggest problem with osCommerce websites is that it is what’s called an open source website, which means that many hundreds of coders have worked on the code that runs the site. Each coder haves their own style and way of writing code, so when it comes to making changes or fixing a particular part of the code, can be time consuming, and expensive.

SEO Works on oscommerce websites A very good idea is to start out with an osCommerce website code, the code is free, have a designer build a code which will look good. Work on the site for a year or two, and if then you realize that your website is going to be a success, that the products you are selling, are actually what people are wanting to buy, at the price you are selling them at, you should seriously consider moving onto a custom made web e-commerce program. These don’t cost as nearly as much as you would expect, and the bonus is, if you want to add a new feature, you are looking at a couple of hundred dollars to make the change, rather than just $200 for the programmer to familiarize themselves with the code that runs the program. Before the actual coding even begins.

So use osCommerce to try out your new online venture but then one younow you site is going to become sucessful, change a a custome nade aplication, thats made especially for your needs.

In December 2008 6 months after I finished doing SEO on the site the visitors are still averaging the same amount of visitors per month. No other form of advertising still works 6 months after you stop using it.
